Welcome Message
Welcome Message from Craig Gemmell
President of BA International & Head of School, Brewster Madrid
On behalf of Brewster Madrid, we welcome you to our website and encourage you to read about what makes Brewster’s particular approach to education powerful and special.
My life as an independent school educator began in 1988; what was to be a one year break before medical school turned into my life’s work because I saw the powerful role great education can play in shaping the course of students’ lives.
In 2015 I came to Brewster Academy as Head of School and was drawn to its campus on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee both because I saw how powerful Brewster’s particular approach to education was and because I was convinced that Brewster’s approach should be made available to as many students as possible.
Seven years and one pandemic later, I am now honored to serve as the President of Brewster and BA International and Head of School at Brewster Madrid, a job that allows me both to support ongoing excellence at our more than 200 year old New Hampshire flagship campus and to ensure alignment and innovation across the global network that will start with our opening of schools in Madrid in 2023 and 2024. Having such oversight will ensure that our student-centered approach remains at the heart of our work.
As you learn about both Brewster Academy and our global network, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of our team on the ground in Madrid with questions.
Subsequent to completing his undergraduate degree in biology, Craig began his life in schools at Pomfret School in Connecticut, USA, in 1988, where he taught biology for four years. After a stint in graduate school at Duke University, Craig returned to New England in 1994 to teach at Groton School, and served in a host of administrative capacities over his twenty-one years there, culminating in his serving as Assistant Head of School from 2012-2015. Along with his deep experience running independent schools, Craig remains a devoted science and place-based educator and delights in teaching students of all ages out in the field. In addition, he enjoys serving other schools as a lead NEASC accreditor and leadership consultant. In his free time, he is studying Spanish and working steadily toward fluency.
